Billionaire Gautam Adani is reportedly engaged in discussions with the Bhutanese government regarding infrastructure projects for the new Gelephu Mindfulness City. The Adani Group is among the business entities exploring the establishment of solar and hydroelectric power plants in the 1,000-square-kilometer flatlands where the city is planned. Lotay Tshering, the newly-appointed governor of Gelephu and former Prime Minister, highlighted these initiatives as part of Bhutan’s broader efforts to enhance its infrastructure and attract foreign investment.
Despite its small population of under 800,000, Bhutan’s push to revamp its infrastructure presents significant opportunities for the Adani Group, which has been heavily investing in green energy initiatives. The talks signify a strategic alignment with India’s interests, particularly in countering China’s influence in the region.
In addition to renewable energy projects, discussions are underway for the construction of a large international airport and a “dry port”—an inland port linked by road or rail to a seaport—both of which have drawn interest from Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. Currently, the region features only a small airstrip servicing a single turboprop aircraft.
While a representative for the Adani Group declined to comment on their potential projects in Bhutan, Tshering noted that negotiations are still in progress, and no contracts have been finalized. Construction in Gelephu is anticipated to begin in the April to June quarter.
Furthermore, a smaller business group led by Anil Ambani has already announced plans to develop solar and hydro energy facilities in Bhutan. The Gelephu region aims to incorporate artificial intelligence technologies and prioritize non-fossil fuel energy, aligning with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk’s vision of transforming the area into an economic hub. Hobeng Lim, a seasoned professional in digital financial assets and regulation from Singapore, has been appointed managing director of finance for the Gelephu Mindfulness City project.
