Zomato’s Strategic Moves and Funding Winter Create Duopoly in Food Delivery, Says Marcellus’ Saurabh Mukherjea

Saurabh Mukherjea, founder and chief investment officer of Marcellus Investment Managers, shared insights into Zomato’s success during a recent interview with Moneycontrol, part of the Samvat 2081 conversations. He attributed Zomato’s achievements largely to the current funding winter, which has severely impacted many companies, leaving Zomato and Swiggy as the primary contenders in the food delivery market.

Mukherjea praised Zomato’s senior management, particularly CEO Deepinder Goyal, for their strategic decision to acquire BlinkIt, which he now recognizes as a smart move. This acquisition aligns with the growing demand among affluent consumers for rapid delivery services. Mukherjee noted that the availability of low-cost labor enhances Zomato’s ability to deliver products quickly to this demographic.

He also highlighted that in the quick commerce sector, only a handful of well-funded players remain, with Zomato and Swiggy as the main competitors. Mukherjea predicts that the funding winter will continue for at least another year or two, further consolidating this duopoly.

In addition, Mukherjee discussed the broader economic landscape, pointing to a slowdown in consumer spending resulting from tighter monetary and fiscal policies. He explained that central bank interest rate hikes from 2022 and 2023 are beginning to impact the economy in 2024, leading to decreased consumption across the board, from big-ticket items to everyday purchases.

While he observed a significant reduction in government capital expenditure, Mukherjea mentioned an expected increase in welfare spending that could bolster rural consumption. His remarks suggest that Zomato’s strategic positioning and decisions during this challenging funding environment are crucial for its sustained success.
